The Compass

The compass section centers around traditional conservative positions in hypertext criticism. Generally, these positions champion preferences for literate (as opposed to electrate) conventions. The best example is Janet Murray's Hamlet on the Holodeck, where she essentially says that multilinearity is all fine and good, but we've got to keep the author in control (clear_sense_of_story.html).

I designed the compass section to serve as a gateway into hypertext criticism. Since the critics mentioned are dealing with literate conventions to discuss hypertext, their work should be fairly accessible to students.

This section also served as a "strawman" for my later endorsements of more progressive stances toward hypertext.
