Meta-Commentary on a Produced Space

The Flâneur

The Flâneur section was my vehicle for discussing more progressive recent hypertext theories. Generally, these theories stress the constructed nature of language and the apparatus shift occuring between writing technologies and computer-mediated technologies. The exemplary case of this kind of theory, for me, is Gregory Ulmer's Heuretics (See process_replaces_product.html). Ulmer argues for a radical shift in the way texts are produced, a call I attempt to answer somewhat in this work.

The figure of the Flâneur becomes important in a Produced Space as a model for students. The practice of flânery that Benjamin describes is exactly the practice that students need to adopt in order to take advantage of the arranging, connecting practice needed for hypertextual composition.
