Meta-Commentary on a Produced Space

The Crane

The thread of my hypertext that deals most explicitly with Lefebvre's The Production of Space is the crane. I chose the crane as an icon because it brings to mind both construction and re-construction.

Lefebvre's work plays a very significant part in a Produced Space; it serves as a vehicle for me to get from hypertext criticism to hypertextual practice without shedding social awareness. What is most important about Lefebvre, for me, is that his discussion of spatial construction and revolutionary practice are intimately connected. Not only does this help give a pragmatic edge to a somewhat vague notion (spatial theory), it enables me to use issues of social justice in the pedagogy section of the course.

The significance of Lefebvre's stress on producing space and the necessity for it to be considered both locally and globally cannot be overestimated.
