Janet Murray, in Hamlet on the Holodeck, argues that hypertext and other electronic fictions should regulate interactivity for the reader. At the same time, she dismisses electronic narratives that fail to hold to print conventions. She dismisses rhizomatic structures that "frustrate our desire for narrative agency" (133) in favor of works that "combine a clear sense of story structure with a multiplicity of meaningful plots" (136).

What kinds of space would Murray's hypertext author make? Should a division between the electrate and the literate be made this way?
