Rule 1. The very existence of links in hypermedia conditions the reader to expect purposeful, important relationships between linked materials. (Landow 83)

Rule 1 still relies on print conceptions of connection and coherence. Does hypermedia demand purposeful relationships between materials? The unspoken assumption here is that such relationships must be either transparent or overtly explained to the reader.

The reader is supposed to "get it."
