Special Conference Strands

CW2K will promote thematic strands running throughout the conference. These strands could be multi-day or multi-event activities or presentations. We invite you to propose and program strands focusing on specific themes or interests for the conference. Organizations and entities, such as Kairos, North Texas Rhetoric Federation, Alliance for Computers and Writing, LinguaMOO, TWUMOO, Daedalus, and Computers and Composition are invited to program an event as well.

The current lineup of strands is:

Definition and Purpose of Strands
The CW2K Strands are a series of special sessions focusing on one particular area of study or concern. Strand sessions will be held on either Friday or Saturday of the conference and may be scheduled for a half or a full day, depending on the number of proposals accepted for presentation.

The purpose of the Strands is to allow for a more thorough investigation of a particular area of study or concern among interested parties than is currently possible within traditional conference organization. For this reason Strand Coordinators are encouraged to develop a capstone event so that ideas generated from the sessions can be well-synthesized by the participants.

Development of Call for Proposal and Organization Review Procedure

  1. With the guidance of the Strand Coordinators, Conference Organizers will create a separate call for proposals handout for each strand. Proposal submission forms will have a special place for potential participants to alert Conference Organizers of the strand they wish to be considered for.

  2. Strand Coordinators are encouraged to help with the dissemination of the call for proposals and are welcome to invite experts in the area to submit a proposal. Invited proposals should go through the Proposal Review committee so that the Conference Organizers will have a record of all submissions *and* so that the potential participant will have evidence of a peer reviewed process for tenure and promotions records.

  3. Strand proposals will go to the Conference Organizers for the general review by Proposal Review Committee (headed by Susan Lang). The deadline for the general review is October 1, 1999. Conference Organizers will prioritize Strand proposals in order that the Proposal Review Committee will review Strand proposals before all other proposals submitted.

  4. After the proposals have been reviewed and accepted by the Proposal Review Committee, they will be sent to the appropriate Strand Coordinators for consideration. Strand Coordinators are free to choose among the proposals for the ones they wish to include in the Strand sessions. The deadline for Strand decisions should by no later than November 1.

  5. Invitations to participants in the Strands will be sent along with all other invitations to the conference but will contain special wording signaling that the Strand Presenters proposal passed a 2-tier review *and* has been invited to present in a specialized area of study.
Strands Scheduling
  1. Because the normal limitations of space and time, Strand Coordinators are encouraged to design sessions so that the maximum numbers of presenters can participate. Creative, new delivery methods are also encouraged to maximize participants participation. The Conference Organizers will do all they can to assist Strand Coordinators with special equipment and room requirements.

  2. Strands Coordinators should offer a preliminary schedule of the Strands Presentations to the Scheduling Coordinator (Joel English) and Conference Organizers so that the Strand Sessions are guaranteed to fit within the space and time limits of the conference. The final schedule of the Strands will generate from the Scheduling Coordinator and Conference Organizers.
