A Note about the Archive Design
One of the first tasks Susie Crowson and Carl Clark undertook as Graduate Research Assistants for the TWUMOO Project in fall 1998 was to develop the conceptual framework for the Women's Collection of Electronic Texts. Not an easy task for anyone but made especially difficult for two people new to MOOing and webwork and by the unique issues relating to the collection.
For the most part, the scholars comprising this collection are familiar with each other or have collaborated closely with one another. Some are academics; some are programmers; many are both or have been both at some point in their careers. All work in the field of computers and writing and/or technology theory. With the exception of one, they are all female. So, it was important to encapsulate not only their work but this close association graphically and metaphorically, as well as reflect current views of feminist epistemology and methodology which inform this archive.
Thus, the idea for the quilt design you see here belongs to Susie and Carl. As they articulated to me, a quilt is comprised of many pieces of material connected with much detail and care to one another, working together toward a common purpose. No one piece of the quilt is more important than another, but each is unique to itself in color and design.
