You see a stone statue of a strong, determined pioneer
woman stepping down from her base. She smiles at you and wipes away a strand
of hair from her tired eyes. Her dusty skirt rustles in the wind.
The Pioneer Woman represents the heart and spirit of TWU. Made of stone,
she looms solemnly against the buildings behind her. Her back is to that
place we would call civilization. She faces the West, the wild, untamed
space that she would help to "dig" out of the Texas dirt to make
it home for her community. She personifies the strength and determination
women needed to pioneer unknown frontiers and endure hardships inherent
in that struggle to discover new lands---the strength and determination
possessed by our students, our faculty, and our staff.
The frontier the virtual Pioneer Woman seeks to explore and claim is
the land of virtual reality, of cyberspace, of computer technology. She
welcomes all visitors to TWUMOO to join her and serves as a reminder to
all of us that women can find comfortable spaces online where they can build
community and gain knowledge.
