Hi Nancy!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:01PM)

Hi, Connie!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:01PM)

How's the chairship going?

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:02PM)

Hi Resha!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:02PM)

Hi everyone!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:02PM)

Hi, Resh.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:02PM)

Nancy, the chairship is going pretty well so far - lots of work, but a challenge! How do you like being back in the classroom after that sabbatical?

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:03PM)

Well, uh, it's easier now than it was before the sabbatical!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:03PM)

That's the positive slant, you see.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:04PM)

Guys, I have to go at nine central to meet some students in the MOO. Just wanted to let everyone know up front.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:05PM)

That's a good time limit for me too!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:05PM)

me three!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:05PM)

Resha--you hear back from M and M at FAU?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:06PM)

It's been a long, hot day.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:06PM)

Just that they would be here.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:06PM)

If Michael could remember the password, that is!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:07PM)

This semester, I can only participate with my Writing on the Web class, if you all want a group of students to give suggestions and feedback as the others collaborate on web pages.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:07PM)

Donna's coming soon, too.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:07PM)

Hey, Michael!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:08PM)

So you did remember the password, after all!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:08PM)

Okay, okay, I almost got it! Password is. . . uh, um, duh!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:08PM)

Hi, Michael.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:08PM)

Hi Michael!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:09PM)

Hey, wow. This is going to be a big chat group.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:09PM)

Connie, I have no objections to having your students comment on the pages, and the writing, in the project.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:10PM)

Second that, Connie. But I think Donna wants to talk about that.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:10PM)

Michael, do you think Melissa is coming tonight?

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:11PM)

Hey, guys! I'm happy to be here. (Yo, Resha and Nancy and Donna! (Mike Otherduh here!) I'm going to be slow at this because I'm still on eastern time. I think my pal Melissa will be logging on soon, too.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:12PM)

I think it's pretty cool that you got here first try!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:12PM)

I want to suggest that we extend the time frame, though. With 101 students, we (Donna and I) think we need at least 6, maybe 7 weeks.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:12PM)

Hi, Connie. Your hello crossed mine. I guess that happens.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:13PM)

Resh--agreed. How about 10/5-11/12?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:13PM)

Sounds good to me.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:14PM)

Michael, did you get a chance to look at our web pages?

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:14PM)

Or should we really even start a week earlier with the intro stuff?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:14PM)

Yes, the earlier the better. Let's give them plenty of time to get used to the Studio.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:15PM)

Resha, I cruised the Cross-Country Cafe in the spring when Donna got me in. But I haven't been back this semester yet and haven't seen the new pages.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:15PM)

What type of class is Melissa planning to bring in?

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:15PM)

Hi Amy!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:15PM)

Hi everyone!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

Yay! Applause for Amy!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

Hi Amy!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

I'm too used to moos -- I almost :waved.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

Resha claps and cheers!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

(Smile!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:16PM)

I don't really know what Melissa is planning. I think this medium is really new for her. We're both going to have to learn from you guys. Hi, Amy.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:17PM)

Hi Michael! nice to meet you.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:17PM)

thanks, Michael, for being willing!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:17PM)

We're here to help and very happy to have you aboard!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:18PM)

Hey, Nancy, this is a wonderful teaching tool. The stuff in Cross-Country was wonderful. Likewise, Amy

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:19PM)

I'm especially interested in the way students are stumbling around trying to learn to collaborate cross-country.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:20PM)

It's a new thing for us all, and not easy!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:20PM)

Did you get your computers up and running, Michael?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:20PM)

Yes, me too, Nancy -- and what factors lead to how well they're able to collaborate.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:20PM)

I agree about the cross-country communication. I wish my colleagues in Wyoming would start in on this. The young people are so isolated there.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:21PM)

I agree that the issue of collaboration has really become a focus for all of us!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:21PM)

I know what you mean, Michael -- I feel the same way about the students here in Eastern Washington.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:21PM)

Resha, my computer life is a mess. Florida won't pay for its faculty to have dial-up connections and somehow we're all on Eudora and Pine as a result. I feel lost with it.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:22PM)

Collab is also one of the biggest problems/challenges in the project!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:22PM)

Can I ask what you all have planned for this semester? What are you going to be having your students do with this?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:22PM)

What's your computer situation for instruction, Michael? Do you have labs to teach in?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:24PM)

Donna's on her way.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:24PM)

How about last week September, intro and response, Oct 4ff select groups, Oct 11ff focused communication in groups about topic...

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:24PM)

Amy, I'm teaching at an Honors College at Florida Atlantic University. Its a brand-new campus, really just sitting in the middle of a swamp with nothing (and I mean NOTHING!) around it for the moment. But the system is flush and so they have great equipment for teaching. We have a lab -- (there are only 75 students in the whole school right now, all freshmen). So there's plenty of hardware. (I hope its not rude to go on so long. . .)

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:25PM)

Hey, Donna!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:25PM)

Is someone writing a quick schedule rundown for Michael? shall I?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:25PM)

Hey Pal!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:25PM)

Hi, Donna. What a pleasure to see you again!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:26PM)

Hi Donna!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:26PM)

Hi, Donna. Yes, Resha, I was writing one, I think.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:26PM)

Hi everyone sorry I am late.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:26PM)

First we need to decide on a topic for the web pages this time.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:26PM)

How about last week September, intro and response, Oct 4ff select groups, Oct 11ff focused communication in groups about topic...

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:28PM)

Week of Oct 18, web page proposal, Oct. 25 - Nov 12--web page construction.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:29PM)

That sounds good, ladies!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:29PM)

Want to do movies again?

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:29PM)

The schedule sounds good I like the movie topic especially since most of us are not teaching 102 this semester

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:30PM)

I think students liked the movies topics

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:30PM)

I did have another thought though

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:30PM)

I'm a little hesitant, only since I don't see many movies

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:31PM)

How about focused time capsules things representative to this century then focused into areas like science, arts, etc.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:31PM)

I don't have a class, so don't worry too much about my input, but...

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

As a research project, the movie topics seemed kind of difficult for students to get focused on...

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

I vote movies just because I still think the time capsule, to do it right, would need some research. But I would be willing to try it, Donna.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

I like that idea, Donna -- opportunities for visual representations, researching, text...

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

Nancy, we need to take you out more often!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

The NY Times has been publishing something like Donna's idea every month or so since last spring, but related to the last 1000 years. They have a web site that might be useful

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:32PM)

I dont think we need to require anything beyond opinion and what they can find on the web.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:33PM)

But maybe it's not really a research project, like what I tried to do.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:33PM)

In the past, we have always used movies available on video for that reason.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:33PM)

Connie, that would be a great jumping-off point!

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:33PM)

Amy, what did you mean about students having trouble getting focused on the movie project?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:34PM)

I'd like to look at the web site, Connie!

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:34PM)

Yes and we were pretty restrictive about which movies were acceptable.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:34PM)

Well, first of all, it seems like students associate web pages with entertainment. That's what they seem to use it for most often, and so that's what they think of writing -- something that entertains, first and foremost.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:35PM)

Okay, Amy. And this is a bad thing?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:35PM)

And with the movie topic that seemed to reinforce that -- it was hard to get them to do research that put the film in historical context.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:35PM)

So, maybe the time capsule idea might make them rethink that somewhat?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:35PM)

So, maybe the time capsule idea might make them rethink that somewhat?

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:35PM)

I'll find the NY Times URL tomorrow and send it to everyone

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:36PM)

We have been combining movies and decades as choices, how about replacing the decades part with the time capsule idea and giving them a choice.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:36PM)

Question about the time capsule.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:36PM)

Nancy -- not necessarily, I don't think -- but in the case of last semester, when we (or at least I) were trying to get them to write a research-based, research resource (forgive me, I'm a little tired so I may not make all that much sense), well, it was hard to help them imagine what that would be.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:37PM)

Could you use some kind of shared text, something printed, either hard copy or on the net, that they could work with?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:37PM)

Afraid they would all choose movies.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:37PM)

Okay, I see, Amy. But I'm curious about what they were writing that served to entertain.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:37PM)

I agree Amy. That was a problem. But no one is teaching research this semester as far as i know.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:37PM)

So that's why I say maybe it's not a -- what did I call it last -- research-based, research resource -- whatever that means. Sheesh. Am I making sense?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:38PM)

Nope, just essay writing.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:38PM)

Nancy scratches her head.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:38PM)

Question about time capsule

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:38PM)

Nancy -- maybe it didn't seem as evident in the final products. But I struggled to try to help them research around the movie, in history & culture, rather than just researching the movie -- actors and fan web pages and so forth.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:39PM)

Well, maybe they would all chose movies, but the more creative ones would be challenged by the other idea, I think.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:39PM)

Yes, Resha and I did too. We told them repeatedly they could not make movie star fan pages.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:39PM)

What kind of web pages are we looking for? Pages that describe items in a certain area?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:40PM)

Let's look at the time capsule web site and think about it till next chat.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:40PM)

Let's look at the time capsule web site and think about it till next chat.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:40PM)

Wouldn't the time capsule pages become dictionary entries on inventions, etc?

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:40PM)

Areas I thought of include: Communications, Art, Science, Medicine, etc.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:41PM)

Not if we require careful annotation and an argument for why the item was included.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:41PM)

How does careful annotation helP?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:42PM)

...and how it's connected to the time period, how it represents something about the time...

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:42PM)

I find it makes the students really consider why they are including a link rather than just picking pretty web pages to link to their own work.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:43PM)

You know, another reason this would be interesting is that you can put things in a web-based time capsule that you can't put in a real-life one...buildings, people, landmarks...

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:43PM)

If I get out and look, I probably can find that NY Times site -- one aspect looked at "the best" of the millenium: song, book, actor ... and each entry explained the choice. One other month dealt with women's issues through the last millenium - can't think of the others right now. And the site has a time capsule that readers can actually contribute to!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:44PM)

AmyB is just babbling on and on, and doesn't even have students in the project...please don't let me interfere with decisions you want to make!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:44PM)

Amy, that's exactly what the Times did with "the best" - lots of different things. So you're not really babbling!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:44PM)

Ah, shucks, Amy! We always want to hear what you have to say!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:45PM)

Awww, thanks, guys. :)

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:46PM)

I'd like to try to get back to the regional perspectives angle, too.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:46PM)

The time capsule might bring this out somehow?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:47PM)

(Yes, yes, yes! Me too, Nancy!)

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:47PM)

Michael and Resha are really quiet here. Any thoughts you two?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:47PM)

Could students somehow tap into local historical societies for info?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:47PM)

Michael, you still there? Once we decide on a topic (or topics), we will have the kids write introductions in which they choose a topic and tell what skills they can bring to a group that works on their chosen topic. Then they respond to one another's intros. Once they narrow themselves down into groups by interest, we do the final grouping trying to include kids from every school in each group. Then they collaboratively write a web page proposal, and get to work communicating over the miles to begin to plan and build their pages. That is the project in a very small nutshell. Sorry if Nancy already said all this and I missed it.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:48PM)

It looks like Michael might have been disconnected...he's not on my list of participants any more.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:48PM)

Michael's name is not on the list right now, Resha.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:48PM)

Yes, I'm here. Following all this with real interest. But I don't quite know . . . hey! Am I on?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:49PM)

Oh darn! Maybe he'll get back in. I've been kicked out once or twice

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:49PM)

What is this, cigarette break or something?

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:49PM)

You're back, Michael!

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:49PM)

Yes, I see you now Michael.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:49PM)

I'm confused. But I am at risk of getting bumped off. Anyway, have been here all along. And am interested in hearing more of how all this works.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:50PM)

Michael, scroll down for a brief brief explanation of the beginning of the project.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:50PM)

It's pretty bumpy tonight!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:50PM)

Interesting -- last time we had a chat meeting I don't think I'd mooed much at all. Now I'm really missing it!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:51PM)

Hey guys, the transcript will be up here a bit later, right?

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:51PM)

I know what you mean, Amy.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:51PM)

Resha -- yes -- it should stick around as long as the table does.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:51PM)

We really need to get the MOO component of the VTT off the ground

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:51PM)

I think I get the basics, Resha. The groups, when they get formed, are made up of students from the whole area, right? Or is it within a school community?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:52PM)

Yes, we try to include students from each college in each group.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:53PM)

Part of the project, Michael, is that the kids are required to work with students from different schools.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:53PM)

Michael, did you get in to the kid's work in at the movie tables last semester?

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:53PM)

My students are mastering basic MOO pretty easily.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:53PM)

Michael, this is off topic, but in case you get bumped -- if I can get your -- and Melissa's -- email addresses I can add you to our VTT listserv. My email's abeasley@mail.wsu.edu

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:54PM)

Boy, am I getting tired!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:54PM)

Donna -- is this your Freshman class?

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:54PM)

Yes, Resh this is your long day.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:55PM)

Yes, Amy. I have two classes in there building Our Town.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:55PM)

Okay, that time I got kicked out! Yes, Resha, I saw the work on movies and thought it was really interesting. I especially admired the energy they all seemed to be giving it.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:55PM)

That's right! I met you there last week. And they're building already? Cool!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:55PM)

Speaking of MOOing, I've got to go do that now. When's our next chat?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:55PM)

Maybe it's time to call it a night and be happy that we at least set some dates. Did you have to leave at 9 our time, Nan.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:56PM)

Thanks, Amy. My email is mharrawo@fau.edu. Melissa's is msprenkl@fau.edu

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:56PM)

Basically learning to write descriptively, but it is giving me a chance to work on sentence level problems before we tackle essay structure.

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:56PM)

I'll write up a tentative schedule and send it to everyone on the listserv.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:56PM)

Hey Nan, how is the work going on getting the links to the kids pages working?

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:57PM)

Hey, guys, thanks for having me in here. Please give my best to Jane Zatta and to everybody else in E'ville

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:57PM)

Oh, yeah. Amy sent me a file I have yet to open. I think I'm scared of it.

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 6:57PM)

Nice to have you interested and joining us, Michael.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:57PM)

Thanks for joining us, Michael!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:58PM)

Think about how you'd like my students to integrate into this project - if you want a mentoring aspect this time around. (not really mentoring, I guess)

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 6:58PM)

Be afraid, Nancy. Very, very afraid. :)

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:58PM)

Thanks for being here, Michael! E-mail any of us if you have questions. When will we meet again?

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:58PM)

Nice meeting you, Michael!

Nancy Ruff (Sep 2 1999 6:58PM)

I'm going. Bye for now all.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 6:59PM)

Nice meeting you, Connie and Amy. I think this is really interesting work you're doing here. I wish I had known about it while I was in Wyoming.

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 6:59PM)

Do you want to use the listserv to arrange another chat?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 6:59PM)

Guess we will set up the next meeting time via the listserve.

Michael Harrawood (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

Bye y'all. Thanks again for thinking of me, Resha.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

I'll see if I can get Michael & Melissa added right after I'm outta here -- I've never done any administration with this list processor, but how hard can it be...

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

And who's doing the 4C's conference? Maybe we can set a time to talk about that?

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

Good to talk to everyone! Bye Michael!

Donna Spehar (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

I am going for sure!!!

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 7:00PM)

Connie -- good idea. That's something I don't really want to leave until the last minute, which I know I would do...

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 7:01PM)

Sherry's definitely going.

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 7:01PM)

Connie, I think everyone is in on that. Maybe we can get to it next time.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 7:01PM)

I figured we all were?

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 7:01PM)

Everyone? That's great! From the invitation I received, I couldn't tell!

Resha Paumier (Sep 2 1999 7:02PM)

You guys take care and don't work too hard! Yuck! Yuck! Talk to you next time.

Amy Beasley (Sep 2 1999 7:02PM)

See ya, Resha!

Connie Chismar (Sep 2 1999 7:02PM)
