Reflections from Far, Far Away 5

Reen-

Last night, Suzanne asked our end of the table what they think of the future for SA, the race question. Peter (Elize’s husband) had a long drawn out answer that amounts to improvement and hope and some bit of equalization. Thoko put in two cents. Then Elize made sure that Mthunzi had a voice. He sifted gears and said – "I do not need to be ANC (the political party). I believe in the children." He said, "Once, I read that if you want to hide and idea from a black man, put it in a book. So, I have book clubs for the children. They should read. I will read all the books I can. Some are so difficult. But you have to read."

He went on to talk about the way he plans to make a difference at the community level and I again thought of the connection with you and your ideas. He wants to remain here, for sure, but he also want to travel to get perspective. As I think we all really should. We can't possibly move into a global consciousness from an entirely Western perspective. I know I must sound like a broken record, but the internet is only the means by which we can maintain the connection. It isn't the connection. That is still wholly personal, material, physical.

I am hoping that you have saved all my entries. I think I may have asked about this already, but I am reiterating. I have figured out that in many ways my emails to you have been my journal.

Love to you and see you soon--
