Feeling Free 2

In the project nothing is enjoyed like the “launch,” which starts the project, and the closure of the project. Students like the idea of dressing in their cultural clothes and make-up, bringing their cultural food, songs, and dance. They always look forward to a video that will be sent to America, and they get comfort even though they are not personally in America. As for me, my spirits get up-lifted all the time when I am in my cultural clothes. Something inside me stirs me and takes me to another world, and that is back to my roots. When I am in that mood, I feel so strong that I can do anything, and I smile inside when my colleagues envy me. They don't understand that this is the only form of empowerment to me. At least from my educationally and socially poor background there is something I can be proud of, my culture. No one can take it from me; I inherited it from my ancestors. I cannot forget the opportunity of integrating it with education. But I am open to other cultures and because of the diverse cultures in our classes, I am learning other African cultures apart from the American culture. I sometimes proudly receive phone calls from America and feel shocked that my friend sounds so close while she is overseas.
