I know that my need for happy endings seems inconsistent -- perhaps antithetical -- to those stories that refuse attempts at integration into larger, less painful spaces for making meaning. However, in defense of the effort to find common ground for such stories I refer to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu : "The past, it has been said, is another country. The way its stories are told and the way they are heard change as the years go by. The spotlight gyrates, exposing old lies, and illuminating new truths. A new piece of the jigsaw of our past settles into place."
